Effective Public Speaking
Effective public speaking means not just what
you say, but perhaps even more importantly, how
you say it.
Here are 3 Super Tips for effective speaking:
HOW TO CONVEY AN AURA OF TOTAL BELIEVABILITY:
How would you like to be able to come across as
completely believable to your group? Do you suppose
that could be useful to you? First, it's important
to remember the old expression "it's not what
you say, it's how you say it". You see, your body
posture and gestures are going to have a bigger
impact on your audience - even more than the actual
words you speak. Study after study has shown this
to be true. So, how do you use your body posture
and gestures to convey total believability? Glad
you asked: take your hand and curl your fingers
gently, letting the pad of your thumb rest naturally
on the side of your index finger. (Do not make
a fist). Then, bring your hand close to your body
about the level of your solar plexus below your
chest. Your arm will naturally be shaped like
an L in this position. This is the body posture
that conveys total believability. Watch politicians,
they do this all the time - gee, why do you think
that is? Do you think there may be times in your
seminar speaking that you want to come across
with an aura of total believability? Now you know
how!
HOW TO WAKE UP YOUR AUDIENCE AND DRIVE YOUR
POINT HOME:
No matter how great a speaker you are - no matter
how captivating and powerful you may be - it's
inevitable that people's minds are going to start
to wander. So, when you want everyone's attention
- your entire audience - to be completely riveted
on an important point you're making, how do you
shake them out of their daze? Here's what you
should do: simply raise the volume of your voice,
and point with your index finger. You can point
at the ground, or for a really dramatic effect,
point directly at the audience. Pointing at the
ground is less dramatic, but still works very
well. Feel free to use a "stabbing motion" with
your pointing finger to mark out the specific
words or phrase you want them most to absorb at
that moment. In the extreme you can even be yelling
at that point, but that's not usually necessary.
So, when you need to wake 'em up & shake 'em up
to get your point across, just raise your voice
and point!
HOW TO COME ACROSS AS THE UNDISPUTED EXPERT:
Let me repeat and remind you that it's not what
you say, it's how you say it that counts. Numerous
studies have shown that the actual words you say
represent approximately 10% of the impact of your
communication. The other 90% is your voice tone,
your body posture, and your gestures. It's useful,
from time to time, to come across as the undisputed
expert during your presentation. Here's how to
convey that with your body posture and gestures:
take one forearm and lay it across your torso,
just below your chest - your arm will form an
L shape (call that arm #1). Take the elbow of
your other arm (arm #2) and rest it on top of
the back of the hand of arm #1, and let the hand
of arm #2 go up to your chin. Allow the fingers
on the hand of arm #2 to curl gently (not a fist)
and cradle your chin naturally in the space created
between your thumb and index finger. Use this
posture to deliver facts and data, or to handle
tough questions from the audience, or whenever
you need or want to convey an aura of total expertise.
