Speaking For
Profit: 3 Major Myths About Speaking For Money
If you've ever had dreams about making money
doing speaking, this article is for you.
Warning: you might not like what you hear,
but isn't it better that you find the truth now
before you invest huge amounts of time and money
that you end up flushing down the drain?
This public speaking training article is going
to shed the harsh light of day on the myths and
misconceptions about making money in the speaking
business.
This is not for the faint of heart, and this
is not a nice "yes you can do it" bunch
of hype, so read on having been duly cautioned.
Major Myth #1 - People Will Pay Handsomely
To Hear Your Story:
Are you a famous celebrity? Are you a famous
sports star? Are you a popular, well-known author,
political figure, or musician?
If not, no one wants to hear your story after
5 minutes.
Have you ever heard of radio station WIIFM?-that
stands for "What's In It For Me?"People don't
care about you or your story, they care about
what you can offer them to make their lives less
painful and more fruitful.
Major Myth #2 - You'll Earn a Fortune Doing
Corporate Keynotes:
If you work really, really hard, write a book
or two, have great inside connections, can cold
call like a demon, and have the intestinal fortitude
of an army general, then you just might be able
to get a gig here or there.
But don't expect to pay your bills on that income.
Are there exceptions to the rule?-sure, and there
are also people who have survived jumping out
of a 13 story building too; does that mean you
should jump out the window too?
Major Myth #3 - There Are Big Bucks In Speaking
Passionately On Your Topic:
Most speakers' organizations have a mantra: "speak
to your passion".
Baloney! Speakers are like authors and inventors:
their book or invention is their baby and they
think everyone in the world will flock to them
wanting to buy it. Wrong!
The reality is that many speakers never stop
to consider if their topic is anything people
want to hear about, much less would actually pay
money to hear.
The question you have to ask yourself is, are
you giving people what they want, or what you
want them to want?
Summary and super-important bonus tip:
If you want to know the truth, speaking is a
terrific business building tool.
In fact, speaking is the #1 fastest, easiest,
least expensive and most fun way to generate highly
qualified leads and convert them into happy paying
customers and clients.
But expecting just speaking alone to pay your
bills is short sighted and, frankly, naïve.
Speaking is, ultimate, the best customer acquisition
tool ever invented. The sooner you realize that
and use speaking for that purpose, the more money
you'll start to see coming in.
