The "5 Minute
Cure" for Fear
of Public Speaking
Don't believe any public speaking training expert
that tries to tell you there is a magic-bullet
cure for fear of public speaking.
No technique will work for every person every
time.
But there are tons and tons of techniques that
work very, very well so it's just a matter of
finding which technique works best for you.
One of the easiest and most overlooked techniques
is what I call "The 5 Minute Cure for Fear of
Public Speaking":
Here's how it works - there's 3 simple steps.
Step 1:
Prepare your presentation using the "tell them
3 times rule" where you tell them what you're
going to tell them, tell them, then tell them
what you told them. This is a standard technique
taught in public speaking training.
Prepare your presentation like this:
- Overview of main presentation
- Main presentation
- Summary of main presentation
Design your overview in bullet points of what
you're going to cover. Make your bullets interesting
and enticing - it's good to create some curiosity
early on in your audience.
Design your main presentation to give detail
and "flesh out" the bullet points in your overview.
Finally, design your summary to be a repeat of
your overview you gave them in the beginning.
Don't worry feeling like you're covering what
you already told them because people frequently
"zone out", so repetition is actually
doing them a huge favor..
Step 2:
Practice delivering your presentation and visualize
success. Feel strong confidence as you practice
so that you create a link between confidence and
talking. This is actually easy to do, and a good
public speaking training can help you create a
strong link between confidence and public speaking.
Step 3:
Deliver your presentation to your audience.
This is where the 5 minute cure comes into play
because a great number of people find that their
fear of public speaking only lasts for the first
few minutes of live speaking!
Once you get 5 minutes in, you'll completely
forget that you ever had any fear of public speaking
and it'll be smooth sailing because you prepared
so well in advance.
Summary & Bonus Tip:
If you've got fear of public speaking that borders
on a psychological complex of if you've ever had
a nervous breakdown from public speaking, you
probably need stronger techniques or even therapy.
But if you're just nervous then this technique
will work perfectly because a little nervousness
won't stop you. Public speaking training can help
to shortcut your success. Just prepare and practice
the way I outlined in this training article, then
you can lean on the 5 minute cure and you'll be
just fine.
